MGM National Harbor

AAEA supports MGM Resorts International's plans to construct and operate a casino and resort at National Harbor.

MGM Resorts International unveiled architectural renderings Wednesday for an $800 million casino and resort overlooking the Potomac River at National Harbor, the waterfront development in Prince George’s County.  The company is in the running for a casino license from Maryland that will allow for table games as well as 3,000 slot machines, a result of a decision last year by state and county voters to approve an expansion of gambling in Maryland.

To pick a site, the Video Lottery Facility Location Commission (more) plans to visit three locations in Prince George’s next month: National Harbor, Rosecroft Raceway and a vacant parcel in Fort Washington. The commission then plans to hold a series of public hearings to gather input before a selection, possibly by the end of the year. The new casino would be the state’s sixth, and it could open by mid-2016.

MGM’s plans call for an 18-story glass tower hotel, a seven-story parking garage and a pedestal “designed to evoke the plinth of a grand monument” like those along the Mall. In addition to the casino and hotel, the project would include restaurants, entertainment, upscale retail and a spa.

The complex, which would stretch 1,500 feet, would also include a reflecting pool with fountains that could be used for ice-skating in the winter.

The two other bidders for the Prince George’s license are Penn National Gaming, which owns Rosecroft Raceway, and a newly formed subsidiary of Greenwood Racing, which owns a Parx Casino north of Philadelphia and has proposed a similar venue on a 22-acre parcel at Indian Head Highway and Old Fort Road.  (Wash Post, 9/25/2013)

Mr. & Mrs. Trevits Expecting Child

By Holly Wood

Hollywood power couple Jason Trevits, left, and Jae Trevits, right, are expecting a child in April.

Jason Trevits and Jae Trevits WILL BE the next big 'thing' in Hollywood.  You can take that to the bank.  Like many in Hollywood, they are scrambling to 'make it.'  But they have already 'made it.'  They have the loveliest little Hollywood nook that is three blocks from Hollywood and Highland.  They are also two of the nicest people you will ever meet.  Their progeny will surely end up on the Walk of Fame.  Just like their parents.

Do they want to be superstars or megastars?  Of course.  Who doesn't.  But when questioned about their professional desires, they consistently refrain that they simply want to work.

They remind me of Brad and Angelina.  Or Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, except Jae will clearly be a breakout star in her own right.  Jason better watch out.  Cause when the female spouse 'breaks out,' it can be a distraction for the marriage.  But then again, Jason has nothing to worry about, because he has matinee idol good looks and talent just drippping off of him.  I can see a movie soon: "Mr. & Mrs. Trevits."  And it will be a blockbuster and establish these two as the Hollywood 'it' couple.

TMZ and every other outlet will seek to get the first piks of the newborn.  But it is rumored that Jason & Jae (JTre) are going to take the personal route and self-publish the newborn photos on their respective Facebook pages.

Good luck Jason and Jae.  Hollywood welcomes your progeny.

SAVE IRONSIDE

NBC made a very big mistake in cancelling "Ironside" after only three episodes.  The network clearly did not give this quality primetime show a chance to build an audience.  "Ironside" debuted with a decent rating for this type of show, a mature drama.  Clearly, if given time, this show could be a major hit for the network.

Thus, we have launched a SAVE IRONSIDE campaign to convince NBC to give this show another chance.  They should air the shows they have in the can and begin production of new shows.  We will not stop our campaign until this show is back on the air.

When you go to the NBC site, click on the 'Select Show'  dropdown and go down to Ironside.  A comment box will open where you can type in your Name, Email, Subject Message & click 'Send.'

NBC's Description of "Ironside"
In the gritty world of the NYPD, no one's tougher than Det. Robert Ironside (Blair Underwood, "In Treatment"). He is fearless; his instincts are second to none, and those around him must stay on their toes if they want to keep up. When his spine was shattered by a bullet two years ago, he swore he'd never let a wheelchair slow him down.

Ironside and his trusted, handpicked team of detectives each offer a unique background, perspective and skill set. Comprising the team are Virgil (Pablo Schreiber, "The Wire"), a man who wrestles with the dichotomy of being one of NYPD's toughest cops in the city, yet a loving family man at home where he imparts life lessons to his children that he does not necessarily follow in the line of duty; Holly (Spencer Grammer, "Greek"), a strong, feisty detective who loves the rush of being undercover and the danger that goes with the job and who has mysterious family ties to the Brooklyn underworld; and Teddy (Neal Bledsoe, "Smash"), a rich, highly-educated young cop who has never been good with authority and is connected in a way that only those born into wealth enjoy.
Their boss, Capt. Ed Rollins (Kenneth Choi, "Sons of Anarchy"), calm and pragmatic, handles situations with a level head and cool demeanor. He and Ironside share a mutual respect and admiration for each other despite their push-pull relationship.

Also in the mix is Gary (Brent Sexton, "The Killing"), Ironside's scrappy ex-partner and a hard-nosed detective who marvels at Ironside's will and ability to piece together his life after being shot.

Blair Underwood and Spencer Grammer

Together, this dedicated and capable group does whatever it takes to solve New York's most difficult and notorious crimes, and they will stop at nothing in their pursuit of justice.

Ken Sanzel ("Numbers"), Teri Weinberg ("The Office"), John Fox ("The Blacklist"), John Davis ("I, Robot"), Ron West ("Man Up!") and David Semel ("House") serve as executive producers on the series.

"Ironside" is from Universal Television in association with Davis Entertainment and Yellow Brick Road Productions.

Ronald McNair Was First Musician In Space

Editor's Corner

By Environment Man

I am troubled by the accolades being heaped upon space station astronaut Chris Hadfield, right, for his musical performace of David Bowie's "Space Oddity.' It is being touted as the first music video in space.

My trouble comes from Ronald McNair (left), who happens to be black, being overlooked as the first astronaut to record a song in space. Unfortunately, the song was 'accidently' recorded over, which is suspect to me. He was to record another song on his second space flight but the Challenger exploded after take off. We know you were first Ron, but this sort of thing has happened too often in America's past.

Gas Pump Couple Does Bon Jovi & Annie Lennox

"Tonight Show" prank, in which a talking head on a gas pump screen charmingly bantered with Will Sims. Sims took the prank in-stride and then, with the help of his wife, Monifa, the couple dipped into some impromptu karaoke with more charisma and musical talent than an episode of "American Idol."

Schwarzenegger Institute For State and Global Policy

Mission

The USC Schwarzenegger Institute for State and Global Policy is committed to advancing post-partisanship, where leaders put people over political parties and work together to find the best ideas and solutions to benefit the people they serve.

The Importance of Post-Partisanship

The USC Schwarzenegger Institute strongly believes that our country is at its best when we put what’s best for the people over what’s best for politics.

The Power of People and Innovation

The USC Schwarzenegger Institute understands that great innovation and great solutions rarely come from government, but rather from individuals, entrepreneurs, and the community. The Schwarzenegger Institute is dedicated to seeking out these people, organizations, businesses, entrepreneurs, and ideas.

Guiding Principles

Whether at the Institute’s symposiums, summits, or in the academic research conducted to support the Institute, the following principles will guide its work in seeking solutions to the important public policy issues of the day:
  • Science and evidence have an important role to play in finding solutions
  • Local solutions are often the best means to solve global problems
  • Future leaders, including students and young people, must help shape the solutions for our future

Policy Areas

The Institute will focus on the following five policy areas:
  • Education
  • Energy & environment
  • Fiscal & economic policy
  • Health & human wellness
  • Political reform
